We are a "data controller" for the purposes of the Data Protection Act 1998 and (from 25 May 2018) the EU General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 ("Data Protection Law").

This means that we are responsible for, and control the processing of, your personal information.

The type of information that we collect

We currently collect and process the following information:

Personal Data

Examples of personal data we may collect include, but are not limited to: details such as your name; date of birth; email address; postal address; telephone number and credit/debit card details (if you are making a purchase or donation); as well as information you provide in any communications between us.

We may also collect information classified as ‘sensitive personal information’ if you are seeking a therapeutic service such as counselling from blink (see ‘Sensitive Personal Information’ below). This may include information about your health, gender, ethnic origin etc

We will use this information:

  • To process your donations or other payments and verify any financial transactions

  • To provide the services or goods that you have requested e.g. to provide you with a therapeutic service or a well-being event

  • To update you with important administrative messages about your donation, an event or services or goods you have requested

  • To keep a record of your relationship with us

  • Where you volunteer with us, to administer the volunteering arrangement

If you do not provide this information, we will not be able to provide therapeutic or wellbeing services; process your donation; sign you up for a particular event; provide goods and services you have requested; or assist you in other ways that you may require.

We may also use your personal information

  • To contact you about our work and how you can support blink

  • To invite you to participate in surveys or research You have a choice about whether or not you wish to receive information from us.

We will only send you direct marketing communications from us if you have indicated you would like to receive it and given us prior consent.

Sensitive Data

Data Protection Law recognises that some categories of personal information are more sensitive.

The following personal data is considered ‘sensitive’ and is subject to specific processing conditions:

  • personal data revealing racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs;

  • trade-union membership;

  • genetic data, biometric data processed solely to identify a human being;

  • health-related data (including mental health);

  • data concerning a person’s sex life or sexual orientation.

When in contact with blink, there may be times when sensitive data is disclosed, either about yourself or a third-party. This could be because you volunteer this information or because we ask for it in order to provide you with a service. If you provide us with any Sensitive Personal Information by telephone, email or by other means, we will treat that information with extra care and confidentiality and always in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

The main purpose for collecting this information is likely to be to provide you with an appropriate therapeutic service (for example, counselling). The data may be used anonymously for statistical or research purposes. This data may also be used to discharge our safeguarding responsibilities.

How we get the information and why we do we have it

You will have given us this information whilst making a donation; registering for an event; placing an order on our website; getting in touch with us via our website, email address or social media; when you engage with us for the purpose of gaining a therapeutic service ; or any of the other ways that you interact with us.

In some cases, we will only use your personal information where we have your consent or because we need to use it in order to fulfil a contract with you (for example, because you have placed an order on our website). However, there are other lawful reasons that allow us to process your personal information and one of those is called 'legitimate interests'.

This means that the reason that we are processing information is because there is a legitimate interest for blink to process your information to help us to achieve our vision that hundreds of thousands more people receive rapid, appropriate and effective mental health support in the UK.

Whenever we process your personal information under the 'legitimate interest' lawful basis we make sure that we take into account your rights and interests and will not process your personal information if we feel that there is an imbalance.

What we do with the information we have

All the information we collect is to help us make sure we can provide peer and professional support, in the most appropriate and caring way. We want to give you the best possible experience when you donate, become a member, volunteer, receive a therapeutic service or interact with us in any other way.

If you receive a therapeutic service from us, we will share your information with the organisation or individual that is providing that service. We will only share information with them that enables them to fulfil their contract and provide you with the best and most appropriate support. Feel free to ask what specific information gets shared with the person or organisation providing a therapeutic service.

It is possible that in undertaking our functions, blink may become aware of a safeguarding concern. This concern may be in relation to a risk of abuse of a child and/or adult, a risk arising from an individual’s mental health, or another safeguarding issue. This concern may require us to inform an external organisation such as the police or a local authority with responsibility for safeguarding children or vulnerable adults.

Where possible, and in line with the values and principles underpinning our safeguarding policy and practice, blink employees and volunteers will always attempt to seek consent to share information before sharing information with external safeguarding organisations. However, this may not always be possible and/or it may increase the risk of harm to the person or child involved. Therefore there may be occasions where blink will need to share sensitive personal information without the consent of the individual.

How we store your information

If you contact us by email, post or through our website, these methods can never be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, while we strive to protect your security, we cannot guarantee the security of any information you transmit to us, and you do so at your own risk.

Data may also be kept on third party sites, for example if you contact us via social media platforms. Those sites may hold your personal data and will have their own data protection policy. we only retain data for as long as is reasonable and necessary, and we ensure that only the people who need to access personal information have access to it.

Our staff and volunteers have training to understand the importance of handling data in line with the Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation. Our website may contain links to other websites run by other organisation. This privacy policy applies only to our website, so we encourage you to read the privacy statements on the other websites you visit. We cannot be responsible for the privacy policies and practices of other sites, even if you access those using links from our website.

In addition, if you have been linked to our website from a third party site we cannot be responsible for the privacy policies and practices of the owners and operators of that third party site and recommend that you check the policy of that third party site.

Your data protection rights

Under data protection law, you have rights including:

  1. Your right of access - You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information.

  2. Your right to rectification - You have the right to ask us to rectify information you think is inaccurate. You also have the right to ask us to complete information you think is incomplete.

  3. Your right to erasure - You have the right to ask us to erase your personal information in certain circumstances.

  4. Your right to restriction of processing - You have the right to ask us to restrict the processing of your information in certain circumstances.

  5. Your right to object to processing - You have the the right to object to the processing of your personal data in certain circumstances.

  6. Your right to data portability - You have the right to ask that we transfer the information you gave us to another organisation, or to you, in certain circumstances.

You are not required to pay any charge for exercising your rights. If you make a request, we have one month to respond to you.
